Raptors' Kawhi Leonard has $124M contract decision to make after Clipper blockbuster deal

Earlier in the summer, the Toronto Raptors traded for Kawhi Leonard to help the organization get back to what they were during his first stint. However, the entire trade was put on hold as the Los Angeles Clippers were being investigated.

Toronto is in a jam-packed Eastern Conference and felt like adding Leonard was a necessity. The trade finally went through on Monday.

“The trade sending Kawhi Leonard from the LA Clippers to Toronto has been made official after a monthslong delay due to the NBA's investigation into the Clippers for salary cap circumvention. The teams initially agreed to the deal on June 30, but it was paused while the league investigated allegations the Clippers violated salary cap rules in signing Leonard as a free agent,” ESPN’s Shams Charania wrote.

Despite the trade just now becoming official, Leonard has been hanging out with the team on their recent group trip.

“Per league sources, the Raptors, Leonard's camp and the camps of other prominent players in the trade remain very confident it will go through soon. Leonard, it should be noted, is known to be with his Raptors teammates (in an unofficial capacity) on a retreat of sorts in Miami this week," The Athletic's Sam Amick wrote.

Leonard will be back at the place where he won an NBA championship. He will also have the opportunity to sign a contract extension worth almost $124 million.

“Kawhi Leonard is eligible to receive a two-year, near $124 million extension upon officially becoming a member of the Raptors. He will put pen to paper on this contract and be under contract with the team through the 2028-29 season, when he will be 37 years old,” NBA insider Brett Siegel wrote.

This would be great for Leonard, and it shows how much the Raptors truly value him. He is an icon in Toronto, and the fans love him, so there is no reason to think that he will not get an extension that the Raptors will be willing to give him.

Toronto is hoping to have a good season and compete with the best of them. Adding Leonard to a growing core with RJ Barrett, Scottie Barnes and others will be a fun lineup to watch this season. Before he even plays a game, Leonard might get a big extension from the Raptors.
