Matthew Stafford is obviously the Los Angeles Rams' quarterback today and for as long as he wants the title. But, head coach Sean McVay is a forward-thinking kind of guy. That's why the Rams surprised the NFL world when they drafted quarterback Ty Simpson out of Alabama with the 13th overall pick.
It would go a bit too far to say that Simpson is a lock to take over for Stafford when he's ready to retire. But, he certainly inched closer with his performance in the Rams' first preseason game on Saturday against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report dubs Simpson a strong "winner" out of the early preseason games.
In the piece, he notes that "in a week where Pittsburgh's Drew Allar and Fernando Mendoza of the Raiders both impressed in their professional debuts, Simpson may have had the best performance of the lot—just four incompletions in 25 attempts, 190 passing yards, two scores and a passer rating of 125."
That should give the Rams and Stafford something to think about. If Stafford does want to retire after this season, he can rest easy knowing Simpson just may have the goods to take over for him.
Don't expect to see Simpson on the field once the regular season starts and the games get tight. He'll likely get in there when the Rams are way ahead in the fourth quarter or at the end of the season, if there are meaningless games. But, there was nothing meaningless about his performance on Saturday.
