Rams' Myles Garrett trade may complicate extensions for key young stars

1 hour ago 3

The Los Angeles Rams pulled off yet another blockbuster trade, acquiring two-time Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns.

The Rams, who already had a Super Bowl-caliber roster to enter the 2026 season, just bolstered their roster like no other. Los Angeles is gunning for a Super Bowl, and they believe that Garrett is the piece that could take them over the top.

It was a move that many other contenders would have done in a heartbeat.

However, while it was a no-brainer move for the Rams, it does raise questions about what comes next for some of the team's young core players who are eligible for extensions, including Puka Nacua, Kobie Turner and Steve Avila.

According to ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler, early reports suggest that the Rams won't extend them this summer.

Rams’ approach is fascinating - taking big swings instead of paying young stars.

Sources say L.A. is giving early impressions it won’t extend 2027 FAs Puka Nacua, Byron Young, Kobie Turner, Steve Avila this summer. Perhaps that changes but deals are not on the radar right now.

Rams facing crucial financial decisions after Myles Garrett trade

Garrett's massive contract now becomes part of the Rams' long-term salary structure after the blockbuster trade.

The move cost the Rams significant draft capital and former first-round pick Jared Verse, signaling that the organization is prioritizing a Super Bowl window around Matthew Stafford rather than taking more of a conservative approach financially.

The Rams were never eager to get an extension done with any one of their key players before the trade, including Nacua. The 25-year-old is arguably the best player on the team, and while he's worth more than what he's getting paid now, all signs point to him being the safest bet of landing a lucrative deal.

Before the trade, it was suggested that it'd be unlikely that the Rams would keep everyone from their 2023 class. After the trade, those odds decreased even more.

According to FOX Sports, the Rams have overwhelming odds of winning the Super Bowl at +550.
