Rams may have found their future after Ty Simpson’s incredible debut

If first impressions matter, Los Angeles Rams rookie quarterback Ty Simpson delivered exactly the kind of performance a first-round pick hopes to produce in his NFL preseason debut.

Simpson came out firing, completing 21 of 25 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, giving the Rams an encouraging early look at one of their most important additions from the 2026 NFL draft.

More impressive than the raw numbers was Simpson’s efficiency. He completed 84% of his passes, consistently moving the offense while avoiding the costly mistakes that often accompany a rookie quarterback’s first NFL action.

For a first-round selection adjusting to the speed and complexity of professional defenses, the performance represented an encouraging opening chapter.

Simpson showed poise in the pocket and delivered the football accurately, allowing Los Angeles to sustain drives and create scoring opportunities. His two touchdown passes highlighted his ability to finish possessions, while the zero in the interception column may have been just as important to the Rams’ coaching staff.

Preseason statistics come with obvious limitations. Defensive schemes are typically more basic, starters often play limited snaps and coaches are evaluating personnel as much as they are attempting to win.

Simpson turns heads with 84% completion rate

Still, completing 21 passes in 25 attempts is difficult to ignore.

The Rams invested significant draft capital in Simpson with the expectation that he could become an important part of the franchise’s future at quarterback. His first preseason appearance offered an early glimpse at why Los Angeles was willing to make that investment.

There will be tougher tests ahead. Defenses will become more complex, throwing windows will shrink and Simpson will have to prove he can maintain his efficiency as opponents adjust.

But his opening performance provided plenty for Los Angeles to build upon.

For a rookie quarterback making his first appearance under NFL lights, Simpson looked comfortable, controlled and prepared.

One preseason performance doesn’t determine a career, but Simpson couldn’t have asked for a much stronger beginning.
