Rams divisional round win is bad news for Steelers, Raiders, Dolphins and Ravens

For teams interested in the services of Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula as their next head coach, the team's divisional round win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday night is bad news.

That's because Shula, who has interviewed for the head-coach jobs of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, Miami Dolphins, Las Vegas Raiders and Arizona Cardinals, cannot take part in any second interviews this week.

According to NFL rules, Shula can interview after the NFC Championship Game concludes, and if the Rams lose that game, he can be hired in the same week.

If the Rams advance to the Super Bowl, the defensive play-caller can speak to teams during the Super Bowl bye week but cannot be hired until after the Big Game.

Second interviews are crucial because they are reserved for finalists and any team that is seriously considering Shula as its next head coach will obviously want to conduct one.

Having to wait for Shula is risky for the five aforementioned teams, as they could lose out on candidates they might otherwise hire in the process for a coach who might not even take the job.

It remains unclear if Shula is actually a finalist for any of those jobs, but he is considered a very strong candidate in this cycle, so it's certainly possible.

It is also unclear how many of those teams are willing to wait, but we'll have soft answers during this week depending on how hires a coach and who doesn't.

If one or more of those teams wait it out for Shula, it could be multiple weeks more before they get a resolution with their head-coach vacancies.
