Now that the Las Vegas Raiders have officially hired Klint Kubiak as their next head coach, the former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator must fill out his coaching staff.
The top priorities are, of course, offensive and defensive coordinator, although the latter job is more important given the fact that Kubiak will call plays.
When it comes to the Raiders' offensive coordinator, Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer reports that Seahawks quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko is "widely presumed" to be the favorite.
However, Breer notes that Janocko could choose to stay in Seattle if offered the offensive coordinator job there, which is a real possibility.
"Andrew Janocko, who has been Kubiak’s quarterbacks coach in all three of his stops as an offensive coordinator (Vikings, Saints, Seahawks), is the widely presumed leader to be Kubiak’s OC in Las Vegas," Breer reported.
"The only thing I see stopping that from happening would be if the Seahawks move to promote him to offensive coordinator, which would give Janocko the chance to call plays," Breer added.
Janocko would almost certainly prefer the Seahawks job, if for no other reason than continuity in his career. But another reason is Janocko would be able to call plays, something Kubiak has already said he will do in Las Vegas.
If Janocko does end up staying in Seattle, Breer estimates that Seahawks offensive line coach John Benton could be the one to follow Kubiak to Vegas.
"If Janocko were named OC in Seattle, I’d guess that Seattle offensive line coach John Benton will go to Vegas with Kubiak and become the Raiders’ OC," he said.
Janocko has been in the NFL coaching ranks since 2012, when he took a job as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offensive quality control coach.
While he has never been an offensive coordinator, he has been the quarterbacks coach of four different teams, including the Seahawks, New Orleans Saints, Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears.
Meanwhile, Benton's coaching career dates back to the late 1980s. He has been an offensive line coach for a handful of teams and once served as the New York Jets' run-game coordinator, also. This would be his first offensive coordinator job.
With the Raiders' offensive coordinator search likely having already begun, we could get an answer as to who they will hire within a week.
