Raiders predicted to hire 3-time NFL play-caller as next head coach

After some concern that the hire may not happen after all, the Las Vegas Raiders have reportedly locked-in a new general manager in Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant general manager John Spytek, per reports.

Now, Spytek and minority owner Tom Brady will look for a new head coach. The Raiders are already 0-for-1 in their hunt after the team's No. 1 option, Ben Johnson, was hired by the Chicago Bears.

The Raiders currently have a handful of head coach candidates currently, but it's possible more will be added to the list now that Spytek's deal is done. One of the candidates on that list is Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken.

In a recent article predicting who will be the Raiders' next head coach, TWSN's Daniel Alameda chose Monken, who has a connection to Spytek from their days together in Tampa Bay.

"Not only is Monken one of the best offensive minds in the NFL currently, but he’s got two connections to the Raiders: New General Manager John Spytek, as they overlapped for three years in Tampa Bay," Alameda wrote.

"Monken was the offensive coordinator, so that connection along with having coached Star Tight End Brock Bowers in college as their offensive coordinator."

Monken has been an offensive coordinator three times during his coaching career. Along with his stints with the Buccaneers and Ravens in that role, Monken was offensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns in 2019.

Under Monken's watch the last two years, the Ravens have sported an elite offense, finishing fourth and third in points per game, 21st and seventh in passing yards and first in rushing yards both seasons.

While the Raiders did request an interview with Monken, it doesn't appear that it ever took place. Perhaps that will change now that there's a familiar face in Las Vegas in Spytek.

Reports have suggested for a while now that former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is at least one of the favorites to be Las Vegas' next head coach. But it's very possible things will change with Spytek in the fold.

Monken would be an ideal fit. Not only does he have a wealth of NFL experience, he's an offensive-minded coach, which would be ideal for a Raiders team that could land a new franchise signal-caller in the 2025 NFL Draft.
