Raiders-Lions trade proposal gives Geno Smith new $17 million wide receiver

It's been a busy offseason for the Las Vegas Raiders so far.

The team pulled off a trade for quarterback Geno Smith and brought in Pete Carroll to be the next head coach. In free agency, the team made some solid additions, like linebacker Elandon Roberts, cornerback Eric Stokes, and safety Jeremy Chinn.

Now, the team is preparing for the 2025 NFL Draft in which they'll have the No. 6 pick in the first round. However, it's possible the team isn't done yet with the veteran additions.

Jameson Williams and the Detroit Lions could potentially be heading for a breakup. The receiver is entering the final year of his rookie deal, and the Lions have to decide by May 1 whether or not to pick up his fifth-year option.

The receiver added fuel to trade rumors on Tuesday by unfollowing the Lions on Instagram and sending out a cryptic post about loyalty

Now, Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports has identified the Raiders as a logical trade spot for Williams. Regarding Williams and the Raiders, DeArdo offered the following:

Las Vegas needs a receiver, so adding Williams would make a lot of sense for Pete Carroll's team. Williams would be another new weapon for a Raiders offense that traded for QB Geno Smith this offseason and is also expected to add Ashton Jeanty with the No. 6 overall pick in the draft. Las Vegas has more work to do as far as building their offense, but adding Williams and Jeanty over the next week would certainly be a good start.

As DeArdo mentioned, the Raiders definitely need to upgrade at wide receiver.

Jakobi Meyers is a solid veteran option, and Brock Bowers is already one of the best tight ends in the league. However, the Raiders are short on reliable pass-catchers behind those two.

In 2024, Williams caught 58 passes for 1,0001 yards and seven touchdowns, cementing himself as a dangerous deep threat. This is an aspect the Raiders are missing, and with a big-armed quarterback like Smith, speedy receivers are a must.

While Williams' 2024 campaign was impressive, that was the first season in which he lived up to his draft status. As a rookie, Williams only played in six games due to injury, and then in 2023, the receiver missed four games due to a gambling suspension.

However, Williams proved that when healthy and available, he can be a reliable contributor.

In Vegas, Williams could immediately start at one of the outside receiver spots. A pass-catching trio of Williams, Meyers, and Bowers would transform a weakness into a strength immediately.
