Raiders just drafted Tom Brady’s new Julian Edelman as QB-WR convert Tommy Mellott

Raiders minority owner Tom Brady has seen this movie before.

When he was with the Patriots, Julian Edelman showed up as a quarterback from Kent State and left as one of the best receivers in franchise history.

Now in Las Vegas, they're trying to replicate that.

They took Tommy Mellott out of Montana State with the No. 213 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft on Saturday.

He starred at Montana State as a dual-threat QB.

Here's how NFL.com's Lance Zierlein sees his NFL future:

"There have been quarterback-to-receiver conversions in the NFL before and Mellott might be the next in line. He’s been a winner and an extremely productive dual-threat quarterback, but he doesn’t have the size or arm talent needed to continue at that position in the NFL. He’s shifty and fast, which could foreshadow a successful transition if he can prove himself as a route-runner and pass-catcher. Mellott’s impressive pro-day numbers and competitiveness could earn him an opportunity from a team looking for a player who could follow in the footsteps of Julian Edelman, who made the same position transition 16 years ago."

The Raiders actually took NDSU's Cam Miller two picks after Mellott, pointing even more to the fact that Mellott will switch positions (assuming Miller stays at quarterback to back up Geno Smith).

It may not work, but it's a forward-thinking chance worth taking by the Raiders.

Brady knows this can be a fruitful experience. Is Mellott the next Edelman? Only time will tell.
