And then there were two: the Las Vegas Raiders have just two known finalists for their head-coaching vacancy.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Denver Broncos quarterbacks coach and passing-game coordinator Davis Webb has withdrawn his name from consideration for Las Vegas' gig.
"Broncos QBs coach Davis Webb plans to withdraw from the Raiders head coaching search and is considered a prime candidate for his current team’s OC job, source say. He’s also received several OC requests," Rapoport reported.
When a candidate pulls his name from consideration, it can mean one of two things: the candidate doesn't want the job or he wasn't going to get it.
We can't say for sure at the moment which one it is here.
Webb was one of two candidates the Raiders have completed second interviews with, which indicates he was a finalist. Along with Webb, the Raiders have interviewed Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero twice.
The other finalist is Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, who is reportedly slated to get his second interview with Las Vegas this weekend.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler says the Raiders will make a decision after the interview with Kubiak and the feeling is "it's probably (Kubiak's) job to lose."
NFL insider Tony Pauline reported that there appears to be a 60-40 shot that Kubiak will take the job. The Arizona Cardinals are also vying for Kubiak and will hold a second interview with him, but Pauline reports that Kubiak is unlikely to actually become Arizona's next head coach.
“I was told yesterday that he’s going to be visiting with the Arizona Cardinals and the Las Vegas Raiders. I’m told that if the Raiders job is not available to him and it’s just the Arizona job, there’s a very likely chance he goes back to Seattle,” Pauline said on Unnecessary Roughness with Q Myers.
“I’d say right now it’s probably 60-40 that he takes the Raiders job if it’s offered to him. Like I said in the report, he is the 8th candidate. He is the guy that everybody wants right now,” Pauline added.
Kubiak would be an excellent hire for a Raiders team that needs an offensive-minded head coach.
But if the Raiders don't get their guy, it looks like Evero might be the hire for Las Vegas, barring the Raiders pivoting to another candidate.
