Raiders fans blaming Ashton Jeanty’s rough debut on the same issue

The NFL preseason debut for Ashton Jeanty didn't last long, but it wasn't good.

The Las Vegas Raiders' rookie running back out of Boise State struggled on Thursday night against the Seattle Seahawks as the teams wound up in a rare 23-23 tie.

Jeanty carried the ball three times and earned a total of negative-1 yard.

There are a lot of carries still to come for Jeanty, but that's not how anyone expected his NFL career to start.

Raiders fans have a theory for what's going on, though.

At Boise State, where Jeanty was the Heisman Trophy runner-up last season and averaged 7.0 yards per carry, he had the most upright backfield stance you'll see for a running back. Before snaps, Jeanty had no knee bend and let his arms hang down near his sides.

The Raiders and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly have put Jeanty into a more tradition running back pre-snap stance. He's bent at the knees and the waist, with his hands balanced on the front of his legs, ready to spring into potential blocking action.

Here's a look at the difference in a couple of screenshots:

Ashton Jeanty with the straight-up stance last year: 7.0 yards per carry

Ashton Jeanty with the new stance in the NFL: -0.3 yards per carry

It is quite the difference.

It's hard to think that a three-carry sample is enough for us to know for sure if the stance change has any real impact on Jeanty. It'll take more time before that shows itself for sure.

But it's understandable to believe there'd be an adjustment period from a place of comfort to finding good vibes in the new arrangement.

It'll certainly ease the minds of Raiders fans everywhere if Jeanty simply does better in the second week of the preseason and puts this debut out of mind quickly.
