Edwin van der Sar and Bastian Schweinsteiger were left perplexed after Manchester United played out a thrilling 4-4 draw against Bournemouth on Monday.

Manchester United took the lead three times and thought they had won the game when they scored twice inside two minutes to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 advantage. But they were pegged back by Eli Kroupi’s strike six minutes from time, which meant both sides had to settle for a share of the spoils.

The contest, played at Old Trafford, has widely been billed as one of the standout matches of the 2025/26 Premier League season so far. It is currently the second-highest-scoring game in the league after Manchester City’s 5-4 win over Fulham earlier this month.

Former United players Van der Sar and Schweinsteiger enjoyed the match from a neutral fan perspective and were stunned by the scoreline.

Van der Sar wrote on his X handle:

“Quickly walked the dog at half time and what happened ffs in Manchester?”

Schweinsteiger shared a screenshot of the match at 4-4 in the 89th minute, which included a picture of himself in the foreground putting his hand on his forehead to express shock.

“What a crazy match 🤯,” he captioned the post.

Bournemouth are the first side in top-flight history to score 3+ goals in three successive away games at Manchester United after a 4-4 draw in Monday’s clash. The Cherries secured a famous 3-0 victory at Old Trafford on December 9, 2023, and repeated the same scoreline on December 22, 2024.

Bournemouth boss names two Manchester United stars who punished them ‘a lot’ in 4-4 draw

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola singled out Manchester United attackers Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo after a 4-4 draw. He admitted the pair caused his side major problems throughtout the match. Diallo, who played the full 90 minutes, opened the scoring, and Mbeumo also had a quite impressive game.

“Really difficult to explain,” Iraola told reporters after the draw. “There were moments where you wanted the game to finish to take one point, but we are very close to scoring and maybe it is better it finishes, a lot of up and downs. United has been much better the first 20 minutes until we changed. 1-1 finishing strong the first half and concede this second goal. Happy apart from the first 20 minutes when they started better. “They were punishing us a lot, especially with Amad and Mbeumo. Alex Jimenez has played really well, defending with Amad almost like a full-back, but all the matchups were good for us.”

The result saw both teams improve their standings in the table. United jumped one place from seventh to sixth, while the Cherries moved from 15th to 13th.
