The Milwaukee Brewers made a big move when they dealt their All-Star ace, Freddy Peralta, to the New York Mets this offseason. They’ve now basically handed the keys to Jacob Misiorowski to be their new All-Star ace, but they still have to fill the hole in the rotation that Peralta left.
While they are loaded with young arms to take his place, getting a veteran might be a better idea, to mentor all of them and hold a key spot in the rotation. FanSided’s Robert Murray also believes so, and speculates that the Brewers get probably the best pitcher left on the market in Lucas Giolito.
“Via Sophia Minnaert, Brandon Woodruff is scheduled for four innings on Thursday. Quinn Priester has a bullpen scheduled for Saturday and is estimated to return in April. Logan Henderson is scheduled for a game (2-3 innings) on Friday. And then Kyle Harrison, a popular breakout candidate, left his start on Wednesday with a blister on his left index finger. Thankfully for Milwaukee, Harrison’s ailment shouldn’t keep him out long. But after trading Freddy Peralta, the Brewers don’t have their typical number of arms ahead of Opening Day. This is purely speculation on my part, but could they be a landing spot for Lucas Giolito?” Murray wrote.
This past season, Giolito posted a 10-4 record, a 3.41 ERA, 121 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.290 over 145 innings pitched. He’d round out the rotation, and they wouldn’t need to count on him to be an impact starter, but rather that he just wins games.
Giolito is also projected to receive a three-year, $61 million deal, but considering opening day is weeks away, the Brewers could probably get him on a cheap rental contract.
Hopefully, the Brewers consider this, as having too many arms is really never a bad thing.
