The Toronto Blue Jays missed out on Kyle Tucker, and they let Bo Bichette walk in free agency. Now, they need to make as many upgrades as possible to make sure they stay a top World Series contender.
Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly proposes that one move they can make is getting a lefty for their righty-dominated bullpen, and trade with the St. Louis Cardinals for JoJo Romero.
“For as deep as the Toronto Blue Jays appear, the defending AL Champions could use another left-handed set-up option to go in a bullpen led by righties Jeff Hoffman, Louis Varland, Tyler Rogers and Yimi Garcia…Romero probably projects more as the No. 2 left-handed option in a contending bullpen, but his 2.93 ERA across 157 games since the start of the 2023 season would immediately make him one of Toronto's top relief arms. The 29-year-old lefty will make a relatively modest $4.26 million salary in 2026, which is a contract year. If the Blue Jays or another team isn't able to pry him away from the Cardinals now, he'll be a coveted piece in advance of the Aug. 3 trade deadline,” Kelly wrote.
This past season, Romero posted a 2.07 ERA, 55 Ks, a WHIP of 1.246, and eight saves in 65 games. He would be an amazing edition to the bullpen, and could elevate Toronto’s pitching staff to the next level.
And as Kelly mentioned, he has a great contract for his stats. He’s set to make $4.26 million this year, and the Jays could sign him to a long-term extension if he does well. And, if he doesn’t, they can just let him walk.
Hopefully, the Blue Jays consider this trade, and get to work on a deal before Spring Training starts.
