The New York Mets did well this offseason to regain talent after taking two big gut punches when they lost Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso, but they didn’t manage to replace one thing, which was Alonso’s power. Getting another power bat to pair with Soto could bring them from just being contenders to favorites.
FanSided’s Christopher Kline proposes that the Mets should look west, and grab a veteran who’s had an amazing start to the 2026 season in Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout. Trout could become a DH or outfielder for New York, and be the perfect power bat to pair with Soto.
“Still, the Mets wield the power of the purse, as Steve Cohen is the richest owner in baseball and money, in theory, is no object. Do the Mets want to obligate significant resources to both Mike Trout and Juan Soto deep into their late 30s, both on staggered timelines? Probably not, but it would certainly boost their World Series odds on the heels of one of the most disappointing campaigns in recent memory. Trout can step into the DH slot, where injury risks are mitigated. Or the Mets can stick him in a corner outfield spot and finally relegate Soto to DH, which is a move years in the making at this point. The Mets could certainly use the boost defensively — the left side of their defense with Soto in left and Bo Bichette at third is severely compromised at the moment — but even if he's exclusively there for offense, Trout raises the Mets' ceiling closer to the Dodgers than any other team,” Kline wrote.
So far this season, Trout has slashed .556/.733/1.222/1.956 with five hits, two of which were home runs, three RBI and a stolen base in three games. While it will go down, combine these stats with Soto, and the Mets get one of the scariest slugging duos the MLB has seen in a while.
As for his contract, he’s currently in year eight of a 12-year, $426.5 million deal. It’s definitely a doable deal, but what makes it more attractive is the fact they only have to pay four years of it, and don’t have to commit to the whole deal.
Overall, this trade benefits both sides. Trout could bring back the slugging the Mets lost with Alonso, and give Soto a true partner in crime to efficiently hit balls out of the park. And for Trout, he gets a team that makes it the easiest for him to get the one thing his career is missing: a World Series ring.
