The UFC heads to Canada to Rogers Place in Edmonton, where Joaquin Buckley and Mike Malott headline a card packed with Canadian talent. UFC Fight Night: Buckley vs. Malott value picks
Mandel Nallo vs Nate Landwehr (Lightweight)
- Mandel Nallo to win by KO/TKO/DQ (63.5% at ProphetX)
Mandel Nallo’s UFC debut in Winnipeg was rough. Jai Herbert stopped him in the first round. Still, the former Bellator standout is one of the most active strikers you’ll find at 155 pounds. He lands more than eight significant strikes per minute and connects on roughly 60% of what he throws.
That’s a nightmare matchup for Nate Landwehr right now. “The Train” has been knocked out in three straight fights, and the most recent one was ugly. Cub Swanson put him down twice and finished him in the first round at UFC 327 in April. Landwehr is also 38 and moving up to lightweight against a bigger opponent. Nallo stands 6-foot with a 75-inch reach, which gives him three inches on Landwehr.
Nallo has his own durability concerns, and he’s no spring chicken at 37. That said, Landwehr has always been willing to stand and trade, and his chin hasn’t held up lately. Nallo has earned the majority of his wins by knockout, and I like him to add another one Saturday night.
Kyle Daukaus vs Marc-Andre Barriault (Middleweight)
- Under 2.5 rounds (62.69% at ProphetX)
Kyle Daukaus isn’t nicknamed “The D’Arce Knight” for nothing. Twelve of his 17 pro wins have come by submission, and he’s at his best when he can drag a fight to the mat and hunt for the neck. Bo Nickal finished him in the first round in June, but before that Daukaus had beaten Michel Pereira and Gerald Meerschaert.
Marc-Andre Barriault is in a tough spot. The Canadian hasn’t won since June 2023, and he dropped a unanimous decision to Michal Oleksiejczuk in February. He has a real puncher’s chance with 11 knockout wins, but he has also been finished several times in the UFC. Dustin Stoltzfus knocked him out in the first round, and Anthony Hernandez choked him out.
Barriault’s last two losses went the full 15 minutes, which is the risk here. Even so, Barriault rarely wrestles, and he doesn’t bring much defensive grappling against a specialist like Daukaus. One scramble is all Daukaus needs to grab a choke, and Barriault’s power means this one could end early in the other direction as well.
UFC Edmonton round props
Chelsea Chandler vs Melissa Croden (Bantamweight)
- Over 2.5 rounds (62.69% at ProphetX)
Melissa Croden is the ranked fighter here, sitting 15th at women’s bantamweight, and she fights a disciplined, measured game. She averages about four significant strikes per minute, absorbs fewer than two, and mixes in takedowns. Her last outing was a clean unanimous decision win over Daria Zhelezniakova in Winnipeg, with all three judges scoring it 29-28.
Chelsea Chandler has been all or nothing in the UFC. She snapped a two-fight skid in June by submitting Priscila Cachoeira with an armbar in the first round. Before that, three of her UFC fights went the distance, including decision losses to Norma Dumont and Yana Santos.
Chandler’s quick finishes give me some pause, especially since she came out of a year-long layoff and looked sharp. However, Croden is a patient fighter who doesn’t take many risks. She’s comfortable taking rounds rather than chasing a finish, and she’s the bigger, longer fighter with plenty to lose against an unranked opponent. I expect a tactical fight that goes the full 15 minutes.
Mike Malott vs Joaquin Buckley (Welterweight)
- Under 3.5 rounds (53.05% at ProphetX)
This is a five-round main event between two guys who like to end fights. Mike Malott’s breakthrough came in April when he dropped Gilbert Burns twice and finished him with ground-and-pound in the third round. That marked his fourth straight win and sent Burns into retirement. Malott also has finishes over Kevin Holland and Charles Radtke.
Joaquin Buckley built his name on highlight-reel knockouts. He stopped Colby Covington, Stephen Thompson and Vicente Luque during his six-fight win streak. Both of his recent losses came on the scorecards to elite wrestlers, Kamaru Usman and Sean Brady, who were happy to grind him out.
Malott won’t take that approach. He’s a striker first, and Buckley’s chin has been cracked before. Chris Curtis knocked him out in 2022. Malott has also shown some vulnerability late, getting stopped by Neil Magny in the third round. With two powerful strikers in the cage, I expect this fight to end before the midpoint of the fourth round.
UFC Fight Night: Buckley vs. Malott prediction
Who will win?
- Joaquin Buckley to win (47.62% at ProphetX)
Joaquin Buckley is on a two-fight losing streak in the UFC, which is why he’s priced as an underdog in hostile territory. Context matters, though. Those losses came against Kamaru Usman and Sean Brady, two of the best wrestlers in the division. Neither fight had much to do with Buckley’s striking.
Mike Malott is a better wrestler than his reputation suggests, but his game is built on boxing. He outworked Gilbert Burns on the feet in April. That suits Buckley just fine. Buckley’s knockout power is the best weapon in this fight, and he’s put away better strikers than Malott, including Stephen Thompson.
Buckley’s grappling does deserve some scrutiny. He also dropped two wrestling matches on the RAF circuit, including one to Tyron Woodley. If Malott shoots early and often, this gets dicey. That said, Malott has been stopped before when the pace picked up, and five rounds give Buckley plenty of time to find the shot. At a near coin-flip price, I’ll back the more dangerous puncher with something to prove.
