President Trump welcomed Xi Jinping to the White House with a red carpet rollout Thursday, for a bilateral meeting and lavish state dinner as part of the Chinese president’s first state visit to the US since 2015. Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, arrived back at the Executive Mansion for the dinner just after 7 p.m. after spending most of the day there with the Trumps. The president gave his Chinese counterpart a bald eagle sculpture before the ritzy dinner — and invited him to tour the White House’s new ballroom, one of Trump’s favorite pet projects.
