THE SPORTING NEWS PRESEASON HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL MIDWEST TOP 25
No. 10 Gardner-Edgerton (Kansas)
The two-time defending Class 6A state champions will have huge targets on their backs this fall. But Gardner-Edgerton is used to that. Both of their title-game victories have been by three points each, proving they know how to battle in tight situations.
No. 9 Westside (Nebraska)
Will anyone be able to challenge the Warriors this season? The Omaha-based program opens on the road against Omaha North with a home date vs. Columbus to follow. They were state runners-up in Class A to Millard South last year. Westwide won the title in 2023 and has talented quarterback Braylen Warren leading the offense.
No. 8 Lincoln-Way East (Illinois)
If it was not for Loyola Academy, it is possible that the Griffins would be holding multiple state championships. Over the last four years, Lincoln-Way East has been eliminated by Loyola Academy, who topped them in the semifinals a season ago.
No. 7 Dowling Catholic (Iowa)
Legendary head coach Tom Wilson has 12 seasons with at least 10 wins since 2006, including a 10-2 mark last year. But it has been a while since they hoisted a state trophy. Quarterback Joey Nahas returns along with running backs Ian Middleton and Cohen Shelton. They also got Iowa State commit Jeffrey Roberts over the summer.
No. 6 Lakeville North (Minnesota)
If Lakeville North can survive an early gauntlet of games, they will be looking solid for the stretch run. The tough schedule for the Panthers kicks off against Blaine on Thursday, August 28 with Lakeville South and Prior Lake also on the docket before the end of September.
