Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal stumbled to begin 2026 FIFA World Cup group play, and have some work to do if they wish to secure a spot in the knockout stage.
Despite being one of the favorites to win the tournament, or at least reach to the later stages of the competition, Portugal drew with DR Congo in their first match of the group stage, leaving them behind the eight ball as Colombia secured victory against Uzbekistan.
Ronaldo himself struggled up front, leaving head coach Roberto Martinez with lots to sort out if they are to recover their standing the rest of the way and make a push to the quarterfinals or beyond.

What does Portugal need to qualify for the World Cup knockouts?
Portugal need one win in their final two group matches to get through to the knockout stage, as four points would be enough to see their way through.
Two draws would also probably do it, albeit likely seeing them squeak through as a third-place qualifier, which would be far below their standards.
Portugal scenarios to win Group K
With a two-point deficit to Colombia after the first round of fixtures, Portugal need to win their final two games in order to guarantee they top the group, including defeating Colombia in the final round.
If they drop points in either game from here on out, it's unlikely they will finish atop the standings. But as of now, they still control their own destiny, as six more points as well as Colombia suffering defeat in the final match would be enough to jump up to the top.
The only qualifier to that is the unlikely scenario that DR Congo also wins its final two matches, Portugal would need to beat DR Congo's goal differential. But that is not believed to be a likely result.
Who will Portugal play in the knockout stage?
If Portugal win Group K, they would face a third-place qualifier from groups D, E, I, J, or L. The most likely outcome is a third-place qualifier from Group L, which will be either Croatia, Ghana, or Panama.
If Portugal finish second in Group K, they would draw the runner-up from Group L.
Because of that, it seems very likely that Portugal will draw someone from Group L, as long as they finish top two in their own group.
Odds for Portugal to progress in the World Cup knockout stage
According to DraftKings, Portugal are no longer odds on to win Group K, as their odds have dropped after the opening-round draw, priced at +110. Colombia are group favorites at -125.
Ronaldo's side is +1100 to win the whole tournament, considered fifth-favorites behind France, Spain, England, and Argentina.
