Portugal and Spain meet in the Round of 16 on Monday at AT&T Stadium, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lamine Yamal headlining a rivalry that dates back more than a century. Both sides have been nearly perfect through four games, and only one will advance to the quarterfinals.

Portugal vs. Spain head to head record

Portugal and Spain have met 41 times dating back to 1921, and Spain holds the edge: 17 wins to Portugal's six, with 18 draws.

Spain's largest win in the series came in a 1934 World Cup qualifier, a 9-0 rout in Madrid.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the top active scorer in the fixture with four goals, though several Spanish and Portuguese players from the 1920s and 1930s scored more across the full rivalry.

Looking only at competitive matches, meaning World Cup, Euros and Nations League play, the picture tightens up: 12 games, Spain with six wins, Portugal with one, and five draws. Two of Spain's biggest tournament wins over Portugal came via penalty shootout, at Euro 2012 and in World Cup qualifying, while Portugal has hit back with shootout wins of its own, most recently at the 2025 Nations League final.

Including qualifying matches, Portugal and Spain have met six times in World Cup competition, with Spain winning twice, four matches drawn and Portugal still searching for its first win in the fixture at this level.

Only two of those meetings came in the tournament itself. Spain won 1-0 in the 2010 Round of 16 on a David Villa goal, a result that sent La Roja toward its first World Cup title. Eight years later, the teams played out an instant classic in the 2018 group stage, a 3-3 draw in which Ronaldo scored a hat-trick, including a stoppage-time free-kick to level the match.

Monday's Round of 16 match will be just the third time these two countries have met at an actual World Cup.

Last meeting between Portugal and Spain

The two sides met most recently on June 8, 2025, in the UEFA Nations League final in Munich.

Portugal came out on top in a thriller, drawing 2-2 after extra time before winning 5-3 on penalties to claim the title, Portugal's second Nations League crown in three finals and the latest trophy Ronaldo has won with the national team.

Portugal and Spain's road to World Cup 2026 Round of 16

Spain has arguably been the most dominant team left in the tournament through four matches. La Roja drew Cape Verde 0-0 to open Group H, then beat Saudi Arabia 4-0 and Uruguay 1-0 to win the group, before routing Austria 3-0 in the Round of 32 behind a Mikel Oyarzabal brace. Spain has yet to concede a goal at this World Cup.

Portugal's path has been bumpier. The Selecao drew with both DR Congo and Colombia in the group stage, sandwiched around a 5-0 win over Uzbekistan, before needing a stoppage-time Goncalo Ramos header to beat Croatia 2-1 in the Round of 32, with Ronaldo also on the scoresheet.

Both nations enter Monday unbeaten this tournament, setting up a genuine heavyweight clash for a spot in the quarterfinals.
