Polarizing ex-Lions, Packers edge considered target for Chiefs

Until any team in the AFC knocks down the Kansas City Chiefs, it's tough to count them out.

However, 2024 was the first season in quite a bit where the Chiefs didn't look as dominant as they once were. That's a concerning sign, and could cause the front office to make a few moves over the next few weeks to months on remaining free agents.

The Chiefs have done what they've needed to do in the early stages of free agency, but there's much more that has to be done.

There are a few players still available who they could use on both sides of the football, including Za'Darius Smith.

Smith is a polarizing player who's caught heat from many for his attitude, but his production is still promising, posting nine sacks during the 2024 season with the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions.

For a Chiefs team that had a tough time getting to the quarterback, the veteran could be a decent fit if they believe he could be a near 10-sack edge.

Pro Football Network linked the two sides, saying there isn't much risk in signing him.

"You’ll notice a theme with these high-ranked free agents who remain without a deal: the elite teams are going to be more likely to pounce. It’s a simple risk/reward equation, as the best teams can board the downside to chase the upside while lesser teams are less apt to make that decision.

"The Kansas City Chiefs ranked 27th in sack rate last season when not blitzing, a damning that has forced this defense to get more aggressive with each passing season," PFN wrote.

Smith could be interested in having a chance to win a Super Bowl, making this an intriguing pairing. If the Chiefs don't address the need in the draft, it could be one of the first moves they make after it.
