Polar bear Pete extends impressive streak in Mets win over Cincinnati

Pete Alonso didn’t start Sunday’s game for the New York Mets, but he still found his way into the box score, and the record books. Nursing a bruised right hand, Alonso entered as a defensive sub in the seventh inning and kept his streak of consecutive games played alive, now sitting at 354. That’s second-most in the majors behind Atlanta’s Matt Olson.

Mets star plays through pain

A sellout crowd of over 42,000 at Citi Field cheered Alonso’s entrance during New York’s 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds. The All-Star first baseman struck out in his only plate appearance in the eighth inning but was glad to take the field.

“I’m just trying to play whenever I can,” Alonso said. “If my body lets me, I’m going to be out there.”

The hand issue started Saturday in the batting cage and flared up again during a third-inning flyout. X-rays were negative, and after aggressive treatment overnight, Alonso convinced the Mets training staff he could suit up. He’s expected to be back in the starting lineup Monday when New York begins a series with the Angels.

Alonso had started every Mets game since May 31, 2024. He last missed time in June 2023 due to a wrist injury. This season, he’s batting .275 with 21 home runs and 77 RBIs, but his production has dipped in the past month, hitting just .221 over his last 31 games.

He’s now just five home runs shy of Darryl Strawberry’s franchise record of 252.

The Mets are 1/2 game out of first place in the National League East, as they are 56-44.
