Pistons sign 6-11 lefty who averaged 19 PPG, shot 37% from 3

On paper, Dawson Garcia looks like a potential star.

But the Detroit Pistons got him as an undrafted free agent on an Exhibit 10 deal that likely has him bound for the G League, so something's gotta give.

Garcia can certainly play, though.

KSTP's Darren Wolfson reported the deal.

Garcia is a 6-foot-11 lefty. He began his college career with a year apiece at Marquette and UNC before settling in for three seasons with Minnesota.

He averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in his final season with the Golden Gophers. He also made 37.3% of his 3s on 4.2 attempts per game.

Garcia is 23 years old, which likely lowered the NBA's overall interest in him.

But for a team like the Pistons, coming off a 30-win turnaround and a playoff berth, it can also help to have plug and play guys.

Garcia is a big dude who can score, shoot and rebound. In a pinch, that's useful, no matter the age or high-end athleticism of the package it comes in.

If Garcia can't break through and earn a roster spot with the big club, he'll likely put up strong numbers in the G League and could get a chance down the road, too. He's certainly a solid guy to get into the organization.
