Pirates' Bubba Chandler makes Pittsburgh baseball history not done in 20 years

1 hour ago 2

Bubba Chandler took the mound for his first start of the season on Tuesday night for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In the process, he helped make some franchise history in tandem with Paul Skenes.

Together, Skenes and Chandler are the first two Pirates pitchers age 23 or younger to start in the first five games of the season in 20 years.

Back in 2006, the Pirates got the pair of Paul Maholm and Zach Duke.

MLB Network's Sarah Langs shared the amazing stat on X:

Bubba Chandler (Sep. 14, 2002) was born 106 days after Paul Skenes, who is also just 23 years old

this is the first time in 20 years the Pirates have used two starting pitchers 23 or younger in their first five games (2006: Paul Maholm, Zach Duke)

Chandler didn't get a win in the stats, but he certainly deserved one.

The only main problem was that he lasted only 4.1 innings. He allowed one run, which wasn't earned.

Chandler threw 81 pitches that included six walks and six strikeouts. He actually didn't allow a single hit.

If Chandler can keep opponents from getting hits, he's going to have a great year.

The Skenes-Chandler pairing has the potential to make some more noise as the year goes along, too.
