Phoenix Suns encouraged to consider trading superstar guard

A few years back, it looked like the Phoenix Suns were close to winning an NBA championship. That's no longer the case.

The Suns haven't advanced past the first round of the playoffs since 2023 and their future prospects aren't super bright. That's why they're being encouraged to consider moving on from star guard Devin Booker.

Suns encouraged to consider a Devin Booker trade this offseason

The Suns owe Booker an exorbitant amount of money over the next four seasons, and Bleacher Report's Zach Buckley argued that it might be in the team's best interest to try to press the restart button.

"There is no blueprint for turning this team into a contender. Booker isn't the tier of star that champions are built around, and even if he was, he's missing a capable co-star," Buckley wrote.

"The Suns are too good to land in the range where drafting and developing one is a viable strategy, and the only way they could afford a co-star candidate on the trade market would be taking a major risk-reward gamble."

Booker will be 30 years old at the start of the 2026 season, which means he's probably not going to get any better. At this point, he is who he is as a player. If anything, he could start to decline as he continues to age and his body breaks down.

At this point, Booker still has value across the league, but that might not be the case in a year or two.

"The only reason the Suns don't feel totally stuck is that trading Booker offers a way out," Buckley wrote. "But you wonder how much longer that'll be the case, since trade values don't exactly keep climbing as 30-somethings grow older and become unconscionably expensive."

Suns owner Matt Ishbia has already made it abundantly clear that the team isn't going to trade Booker this summer, so it's a moot point. But, the argument that they should consider it is a valid one.
