Phillies' Trea Turner explains why baseball is 'dumb'

1 hour ago 4

"That's how dumb this game is," Philadelphia Phillies star Trea Turner said on Saturday night about the game of baseball.

Of course, baseball is Turner's life, but that also gives him quite the expertise in the quirks and quandaries presented each and every day on the diamond.

In this case, Turner had a very specific reason for that take.

Turner estimated to reporters that he had taken 350 swings before Friday's game. And in that game, he finished 0-for-6.

After that, Turner decided to take exactly zero swings before Saturday's game. And then he went 4-for-5, all singles.

Baseball certainly is a funny game.

Even those stat lines don't tell the whole story. A player can have a game with four lucky hits, or a game with four unlucky outs.

The objective of baseball is to hit a round ball with a round bat, squarely, and then there are a bunch of guys out there with gloves trying to deny you hits on the best-struck and worst-struck pieces of contact, too.

It feels like every night you can turn on a baseball game and see something you've never seen before.

Maybe it's dumb. Maybe that's also what makes it brilliant.
