Phillies-Rockies trade proposal brings 2.18 ERA pitcher to Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Phillies are trailing the New York Mets in the National League East. They could use some help in the bullpen if they want to make a deep postseason run.

The Phillies' bullpen was hit hard when their closer, Josè Alvarado, was suspended. He will be ineligible for the postseason. Jordan Romano has stepped into the closer role, but he has a 6.84 ERA on the year. Since Alvarado's suspension, Romano has a 5.40 ERA. Overall, the Phillies' bullpen has the seventh-worst ERA in baseball at 4.56.

There should be plenty of talented bullpen arms available to the Phillies at the trade deadline. Even if they cannot land a closer, a reliable arm could help them in their quest for a World Series title. MLB insider Mark Feinsand suggested the team could trade for Jake Bird of the Colorado Rockies.

The Rockies are set up to be sellers, and Bird could be one of their top trade chips. The 29-year-old has three more years of club control and is playing great this season.

He has a 2.18 ERA in 31 games this year. He has finished 27 games in his big league career, but he has just one save as a big leaguer. He has four saves as a minor leaguer. He is not a candidate to replace Romano, but he can be an elite weapon for the Phillies. He has nine holds and has appeared in the seventh inning or later 10 times this year.

Bird will be more expensive than other relievers at the deadline since he has so much club control left. However, he could be a piece that pays off for the Phillies in October.
