The Philadelphia Phillies are heading towards the 2026 MLB trade deadline on August 3 with a clear need for more offensive firepower, and ideally, in the outfield.
The only issue is that finding the ideal outfielder for this team isn't going to be easy. That's why, in an ideal world, Bryce Harper could move back to right field, open up first base, and allow the Phillies to add a much more readily available first baseman.
However, even though Harper reportedly made the offer to switch back to right field to the Phillies, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the club has turned down such an offer at risk of injury.
Phillies reportedly turn down Bryce Harper's outfield offer
"Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper hasn't played right field since April 2022 when he tore an elbow ligament, but says he would be willing to move back to right field temporarily if it would help the Phillies acquire a right-handed bat," Nightengale writes.
While Nightengale the Phillies "appreciate" Harper's offer to move back to the outfield, they currently have "no interest in moving Harper back to the outfield and risking injury."
This is a fascinating situation for the Phillies, as moving Harper back to the outfield would open the door to a few potential trades, which could be a lot easier to make than finding a right-handed hitting outfielder.

First basemen such as Christian Walker and Willson Contreras might be easier to trade for than a righty-hitting outfielder like Byron Buxton or Mike Trout.
This dynamic with Harper has been a fascinating one for a little while now, as a potential move back to the outfield has been pondered during the offseason and during free agency.
But, even though Harper opened the door to a move back to the outfield, the Phillies have seemingly turned down such an offer, and will instead be looking to trade for an outfielder instead of adding a new first baseman and moving Harper back to right field.
