Phillies receive warranted warning on Kyle Schwarber, Cristopher Sanchez

1 hour ago 3

The Philadelphia Phillies have been playing some incredible baseball since Don Mattingly took over, as Cristopher Sanchez had a top-five scoreless streak of all-time, and the best of a lefty starter ever, and Kyle Schwarber is on pace for 60 homers.

These two stars have made the 2026 season incredibly fun to watch as a Phillies fan, as Sanchez is one of the best pitchers, and Schwarber is one of the best hitters in the sport. Add in Bryce Harper, Zack Wheeler, Jhoan Duran, and Brandon Marsh, and this Phillies roster has a lot of fun players.

However, there is one issue worth mentioning. As David Schoenfield of ESPN warned, the Phillies can't keep relying solely on the big stars, and they will need their other players to start picking up the pace if the Phillies want a World Series ring.

Phillies receive warning from an ESPN analyst that's well-warranted

"Will it continue? Sure ... but that's not necessarily the issue," Schoenfield writes. "The Phillies are 32-16 under interim manager Don Mattingly, so maybe a new voice has helped, but this is still a team with a lot of holes..."

While their biggest strength should continue, with Sanchez and Schwarber not looking likely to slow down anytime soon, there is real concern about the rest of the team.

In the pitching staff, Aaron Nola is a big question, and so is the fifth spot in the rotation. Andrew Painter didn't work out, and now the Phillies are forced to try something new.

The bullpen, specifically the left-handers in Jose Alvarado, Tim Mayza, Tanner Banks, and Kyle Backhus are questionable.

Looking to the lineup, aside from Harper, Schwarber, and Marsh, every other hitter has an OPS below .700. Bryson Stott, Alec Bohm, J.T. Realmuto, Trea Turner, Justin Crawford, and the right field platoon need to perform better.

While Schoenfield believes Schwarber, Sanchez, and all the Phillies' top stars should continue to dominate, there is a real question whether the rest of the roster will be good enough to win.

Whether it's through players turning things around or the Phillies getting help at the trade deadline, things can't stay the way they are if the Phillies want to make a World Series push this season.
