The Philadelphia Phillies hit rock bottom during their early-season losing streak. The New York Mets were right alongside them as one of the worst teams in baseball. Philadelphia endured a skid that nearly lasted two weeks before finally securing a win.
“The longest losing streak in baseball now belongs to the Philadelphia Phillies, who dropped their eighth straight and are tied with the Mets for the worst record in the National League at 8-16. At -50, the Phillies also have the worst run differential in baseball by 15 runs,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote.
Eventually, the organization made the decision to move on from Rob Thomson and promote Don Mattingly as interim manager.
“There’s a major shakeup in Philadelphia. The Phillies fired manager Rob Thomson on Tuesday morning. Don Mattingly is the interim skipper, with the team’s press release saying he’ll hold that position for the remainder of the 2026 season,” MLB Trade Rumors’ Anthony Franco wrote.
Thomson may not be the only person the Phillies part ways with in the near future. FanSided’s Christopher Kline believes the team could trade Alec Bohm due to his slow start.
“Alec Bohm is essentially the worst qualified hitter in the majors right now. He's batting .157 (16-for-102) with a .444 OPS. He has a single home run. Bohm has never generated much power, but he can't elevate or drive the baseball whatsoever right now. He's experiencing some bad luck (.224 xBA), but come on. We know the deal, and Bohm is completely lost in the weeds. The Phillies should see what the trade market offers up for a 29-year-old with All-Star pedigree,” Kline wrote.
Bohm has been in a questionable position since the offseason, with uncertainty surrounding his long-term future in Philadelphia. After such a slow start, it appears the team’s most logical move may be to place him on the trade block.
The Phillies also have a top prospect in Aidan Miller who could eventually replace Bohm once he is ready. Bohm is currently on a $10 million deal, and while he was productive earlier in his career, it may be time for both sides to move in a different direction.
