Phillies predicted to sign $9 million three-time Cy Young, two-time World Series champion ace to replace Ranger Suarez

The Philadelphia Phillies have yet to address their biggest problems, with one of them being replacing an All-Star starting pitcher in Ranger Suarez. With a bruised rotation, they need to find someone fast.

Fansided’s Christopher Kline predicts that the Phillies will eventually settle on someone they’ve been linked to already, signing three-time Cy Young Max Scherzer. They won’t sign him ASAP though, as they’d give a chance for someone else to step up, and will probably wait till Memorial Day to pull the trigger if they need to.

“Max Scherzer has made it clear that he'd like to join a contending team with an opening in their rotation. He's also willing to wait until after the season starts to latch onto the right situation. With that in mind, it's tough to predict exactly when and where he'll sign, but a team like the Philadelphia Phillies makes a lot of sense. The Phillies have one of the best rotations in the league when healthy, but that rotation is not healthy right now. Zack Wheeler is expected to miss the beginning of the season as he recovers from thoracic outlet surgery, and who knows how he'll look when he returns? Beyond that, the Phillies let Ranger Suarez go and did not replace him,” Kline wrote.

This past season, Scherzer posted a 5-5 record, a 5.19 ERA,  82 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.294 over 85 innings pitched. Even though he was battling injuries, in the postseason he showed that Mad Max was still to be feared.

Scherzer is projected to receive a one-year, $8.9 million deal, and for the Phillies, this might be too good to pass up. Even if he can’t make it as a starter, using him as a reliever might be a great move as well.

Hopefully, they decide quickly on getting Scherzer, as he could be a commodity many contenders will take a look at.
