The Philadelphia Phillies' offseason is going to be one of the most closely watched among all MLB teams this winter. There are so many directions the team could go and plenty of surprising moves that could shape the future of the roster.
The Phillies are in a difficult position, as they may need to start building for the future while still having enough veteran talent to make another run at the World Series. After losing the Wild Card Series to Atlanta, Bryce Harper made it clear that the team could look different in 2027.
“I'd imagine this team is going to look a lot different next year," Harper told the media.
One of the Phillies' biggest needs is right field once again. Harper played the position after the trade deadline, but a return for Luis Arraez doesn't seem likely. As a result, right field is expected to be a major area of emphasis this offseason.
“Of the areas that the team needs to address, not much has changed over the last couple of years. This is still a group that needs more offensively from their outfield and also better pitching from the bullpen. In terms of free agency, these should certainly be the areas that they are focused on, but it might not be the only one,” SI’s Nick Ziegler wrote.
With the Phillies balancing the need to prepare for the future with a closing championship window, they could get aggressive this offseason. CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa believes they could sign Seiya Suzuki.
“The 32-year-old Suzuki is one of only four qualified hitters to post a 125 OPS+ or better each of the last four seasons. He's a right-handed hitter with unerring patience and strong ball-tracking data (exit velocity, etc.) at a time when right-handed power is in shockingly short supply. Suzuki is also sneaky fast, though don't expect him to pile up big stolen base totals. Thanks to improved jumps with the help of outfield coach Quintin Berry, Suzuki made the leap from average at best defender to legitimately excellent this season,” Axisa wrote.
Signing Suzuki would be a reliable move that could pay major dividends on both sides of the ball. He has consistently been known for his bat, and there is little doubt about his offensive ability. He has also established himself as a strong defender, finishing as a Gold Glove finalist this season.
Suzuki just finished his $85 million contract with the Chicago Cubs. He could be worth the investment for Philadelphia, as the Phillies need a reliable presence who can make an impact in right field.
