Phillies predicted to demote slumping 30-year-old to Triple-A by end of June

Roster turnover is an underrated story during a Major League Baseball season.

Throughout the year, dozens of players in every organization know they have to perform to get to or stay in the big leagues. For fringe roster players like Philadelphia Phillies outfielder/first baseman Weston Wilson, every day is like a high-stakes tryout.

The Phillies hoped Wilson would play the role of platoon slugger this year. He's 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, he always hit for power in the minors, and he put up an .836 OPS for the Phillies in an impressive 40-game stint last season.

However, things haven't gone according to plan in 2025, as the 30-year-old owns a .194 batting average and .587 OPS in his first 20 games of action.

Because Wilson hasn't delivered in the role he's been asked to play, and because he's already not getting a ton of opportunities, FanSided's Edward Eng predicted recently that he would be demoted to Triple-A by the end of June.

"With Wilson struggling to provide any valuable contributions to the Phillies, it could serve him better (to option him) down to the minors where he can attempt to rediscover his game," Eng wrote.

"At the same time, with (Otto) Kemp having already taken reps in left field with Lehigh Valley this season, he could even be a suitable replacement for Wilson for the time being as (he) works things out."

This is Wilson's final option year, meaning the Phillies can send him back and forth to Triple-A for the remainder of the year, but he'd have to be waived if he didn't make the major league roster to begin the 2026 season.

Can Wilson still find a way to contribute to the 2025 Phillies? He's shown the talent to do so in the past, but excelling in limited playing time against the best players in the world is always a challenge.
