Being booed by your hometown crowd is a tough look — especially when it’s a game you are not even playing in.
That’s what happened when some of the Phillies players were shown on the Jumbotron while taking in the Flyers’ 1-0 overtime win over the Penguins in Game 6 of their first-round series Wednesday night — a day after the front office fired manager Rob Thomson after going 10-19 in their first 29 games.
Loud boos came from the crowd as the Phillies players and their families, sitting in a suite at Xfinity Mobile Arena, were spotlighted early in the third period of a scoreless game.
Phillies players, included JT Realmuto, went across the street after their game against the Giants was postponed and rescheduled as part of a split doubleheader Thursday at Citizens Bank Park.
“It’s awesome,” Realmuto told NBC Sports Philadelphia of taking in Game 6. “You know, this team, they reminded us of a little October baseball being able to walk in here. It got rained out tonight, so we jumped at the chance to come over and support the Flyers.”
The Phillies (10-19) are a half-game ahead of the Mets for MLB’s worst record.
Bench coach Don Mattingly was named as an interim manager through the end of the 2026 season after recently dismised ex-Red Sox manager Alex Cora turned down the opportunity.
Dusty Wathan, who served as a third base coach since the 2018 season, was promoted to bench coach, and Anthony Contreras will take over Wathan’s responsibilities.
Some of the Phillies players were booed by their hometown crowd at Game 6 of the Flyers-Penguins Round 1 playoff series from a suite at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. XThe shakeup came after the Phillies finished the 2025 regular season with 96 wins and one of the best run differentials in baseball to claim the NL East before losing to the eventual-champion Dodgers in the NLDS.
The players took the boos in stride, smiling, clapping and waving when they were shown on the big screen.
Ultimately, it was a good night for Flyers fans.
