Phillies massive bust named 'worst pitcher' in 2025 season

The Philadelphia Phillies are on the brink of elimination in the 2025 MLB playoffs, as they are down 2-0 to the Los Angeles Dodgers

Philadelphia made it clear this offseason that they were going to address the bullpen, and they attempted to do that by signing reliever Jordan Romano to a one-year, $8.5 million deal. Romano was supposed to be the team's closer, but instead, he was one of the biggest busts in baseball.

Jordan Romano's stats speak for themself

After a down season with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2024, Dave Dombrowski decided to take a flyer and sign the two-time All-Star Romano with hopes he could return to his 2022-2023 form.

In a recent article by Bleacher Report, Jordan Romano was named the worst pitcher in MLB this season. The list featured several Colorado Rockies pitchers, which is no surprise considering how bad the team was and the nature of Coors Field.

Romano pitched 42.2 innings with the Phillies over 49 appearances and posted an 8.23 ERA. His bWAR was -1.7… for a relief pitcher. His H/9 neared 10, and his HR/9 was also atrocious at 2.1.

It was certainly a season to forget for Romano, but it's unclear if he will get another chance with another organization. He was left off the Phillies' postseason roster with a middle finger inflammation injury.

Romano's fall off might need to be studied. After not having an ERA above 3.00 in his previous four seasons before 2024, he posted back-to-back seasons with an ERA above 6.50.
