Phillies make very fascinating Andrew Painter decision with trade deadline looming

The Philadelphia Phillies are heading towards the 2026 MLB trade deadline with three major needs: one in the bullpen, another in the outfield, and one in the starting rotation.

Of those needs, the starting rotation need is one of the more frustrating for the Phillies. They should have a good top-five starters with how much is invested into that group, but that fifth spot has been a real problem.

But, with the deadline looming, the Phillies announced a very fascinating roster move with Andrew Painter. They've recalled the former top pitching prospect and will give him another chance to start in the big leagues.

Phillies recall Andrew Painter days before trade deadline

"Prior to tonight's game against the Baltimore Orioles, the Phillies recalled RHP Andrew Painter from Lehigh Valley (AAA). To make room for him on the 26-man roster, RHP Brian Keller was optioned to Lehigh Valley," the Phillies announced.

This roster move from the Phillies is extremely interesting. Obviously, recalling Painter is a big move on its own. But the context of the timing makes this decision extremely fascinating.

The MLB trade deadline is just three days away on August 3. Painter is getting recalled by the Phillies and is expected to start on Friday night for Philadelphia in what's going to be a pivotal start for Painter and the Phillies.

Painter being up in the Majors just days before the deadline could mean a few different things. One could be a trade showcase, though that's not likely with his outings to begin the season being enough for teams that might have interest in Painter.

A more realistic reason why Painter is getting this start on Friday night is that, if he thrives, the Phillies might decide to bank on Painter being their No. 5 starter and shift gears to focusing on outfield and bullpen upgrades.

But if he struggles in the big leagues once again, then the Phillies and Dave Dombrowski will know that they need to acquire a new starter for their No. 5 spot this season, as Painter cannot be relied upon to join the rotation.

The 23-year-old right-hander had a 7.06 ERA in 65 innings in the Majors before being demoted earlier this year, and since then at Triple-A, he's turned in some mixed results, posting a 4.56 ERA.

Phillies fans should tune in Friday night, as a lot could be at stake with this start for both the trade deadline and Painter's future with the team beyond this July 31 start.
