The Philadelphia Phillies will be in the market for serious upgrades later this offseason. Currently in the midst of a stellar season that’s already resulted in another NL East division title, the Phillies will look to continue their dominance next season and beyond.
Phillies could target Alex Bregman in free agency
Notably, star slugger Kyle Schwarber is set to hit free agency this offseason. Schwarber has arguably been the Phillies’ best player this season, slashing .241/.367/.559 with an NL-leading 53 home runs and 129 RBIs. As an insurance policy of sorts, Sports Illustrated’s Zach Pressnell suggests that the Phillies could target third baseman Alex Bregman in free agency should they lose Schwarber.
“It's unlikely they can afford to sign both stars, but if they lose out on their slugger, signing Bregman would be quite a nice replacement,” Pressnell said. “Bregman would fill a hole at third base, which would allow Alec Bohm to be traded or moved to the outfield. Again, this is an expensive idea, but it's one the Phillies could look to make in order to place themselves at the top of the league for years to come.”
Bregman is currently enjoying a solid season in his first with the Boston Red Sox in 2025. Despite dealing with injuries throughout the year, Bregman is slashing .278/.364/.471 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs in 110 games. Bregman was also named an All-Star for the first time since 2019 for his efforts. He signed a three-year, $120 million deal with the Red Sox before this season, but has opt-out clauses in both 2025 and 2026.
