The Philadelphia Phillies had two main priorities this winter: re-sign designated hitter Kyle Schwarber and catcher J.T. Realmuto.
They accomplished the bigger feat of the two, re-signing Schwarber to a five-year, $150 million contract. He's now back in Philadelphia for the long haul, while Realmuto is still a free agent.
But, during his post-contract interview on NBC Sports Philadelphia, Schwarber revealed that he made a pitch to Realmuto to try and convince him to return to the Phillies this offseason.
Kyle Schwarber reveals pitch to J.T. Realmuto for Phillies reunion
"I sent him a text, you know. I would not be lying if to didn't send one to JT, trying to see where he's at and try to coax him." Schwarber said. "We'd all love to have JT Realmuto back. We know how much he means on the field, in the clubhouse, and to the city."
Keeping Schwarber around in Philadelphia was key, and next in line for the Phillies front office this winter is to bring back Realmuto for a few more seasons.
He's not going to get a five-year deal like Schwarber did, but Realmuto could find himself with a two- to three-year deal worth anywhere from $15 million to $25 million per year.
More: Rangers' JT Realmuto free agent rumor is good news for Phillies
Realmuto is the best catcher option available for the Phillies this winter, and with his familiarity with the pitching staff and the city, there's no reason not to try and bring him back.
Dave Dombrowski and the Phillies do have an offer on the table for Realmuto, and his market isn't robust, making a Phillies reunion the likeliest outcome for the veteran All-Star catcher this winter.
Schwarber, shortly after signing with the Phillies, made a pitch to Realmuto to return to Philadelphia alongside him.
It makes a lot of sense for everyone involved if Realmuto returns, and Schwarber's pitch might speed up the process of the stalwart catcher coming back to the Phillies this winter.
