Phillies' Jesus Luzardo on track to be best road pitcher in MLB history since 1913

The Philadelphia Phillies have been playing some great baseball recently, as their 21-7 August has continued into September, with the Phillies going 2-0 against the Arizona Diamondbacks on the road.

As the Phillies beat the D-Backs Tuesday night, Jesus Luzardo put together another incredible outing, allowing just one run and securing another win for Philadelphia and another win for him on the road.

Luzardo has been incredible as a road pitcher this year, but how good has he been in the context of MLB history? According to OptaSTATS, there is no pitcher since at least 1913 to be pitching as well as Luzardo has on the road in MLB history.

"The Phillies' Jesus Luzardo on the road this year: 9-0, 1.76 ERA, 116 K," OptaSTATS shared. "Since ERA became official in both leagues in 1913, no MLB pitcher has finished a season undefeated with a sub-2.00 ERA & 100+ strikeouts on the road."

Luzardo has been unstoppable on the road this season, as he's putting together an all-time performance away from Citizens Bank Park for the Phillies in 2026.

This year, Luzardo has a 3.02 ERA with a 13-5 record and 5.6 bWAR with 209 strikeouts and a 150 ERA+ in 169.2 innings of work.

But when pitching on the road, in those 15 starts, Luzardo has a 1.76 ERA in 92 innings pitched with a 9-0 record and 116 strikeouts.

The most glaring difference is that he limits the home runs allowed on the road, giving up just three in his 15 road starts compared to 12 in his 13 starts at home.

Luzardo's been incredible on the road, and if he can stay undefeated and keep his ERA under 2.00 while on the road, he'll have a legitimate case for owning the best season ever by a pitcher while pitching on the road.

Luzardo has another two starts projected to be on the road this season, one against the Atlanta Braves and another against the New York Mets.

If he can continue his road dominance in those matchups, the Phillies lefty could have a legitimate case for having the best season of any pitcher in MLB history when on the road.
