The Philadelphia Phillies are heading towards the 2026 MLB trade deadline with three clear needs: right-handed hitting outfielder, a No. 5 starting pitcher, and a high-leverage reliever.
Of those needs, the most difficult one to find will be a right-handed-hitting outfielder. But the rotation and bullpen needs should be a bit easier to resolve.
In a trade idea from Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller, the Phillies would resolve one of those needs with a 3.45 ERA ace, but also add a lefty-hitting, .309 batting average outfielder in a wild, but "realistic" trade idea with the San Francisco Giants.
Phillies get wild but 'realistic' trade idea with Giants to solve rotation and OF needs
"Realistic Trade: Philadelphia Phillies acquire OF Jung Hoo Lee, LHP Robbie Ray, and cash considerations from San Francisco Giants for IF Aroon Escobar and RHP Moises Chace," Miller writes.
This is a wild trade idea that Miller deems "realistic." For starters, Ray, the 3.45 ERA starting pitcher, would be a big help for the Phillies rotation. And Lee, the .309 hitting outfielder who has a .782 OPS, would be a nice upgrade in the outfield.
But, as a left-handed-hitting outfielder, Lee would make things a bit more complicated for the Phillies outfield with Brandon Marsh and Justin Crawford locked into spots at the moment. Ray, at least, would be a seamless addition to the rotation.

While the Phillies could have interest in both Lee and Ray, it's hard to imagine such a blockbuster trade being agreed upon for a simple reason: money.
Lee is signed through the 2029 season on a huge six-year, $113 million deal. That's roughly $21 million or so per-season. Ray, meanwhile, is an impending free agent in the middle of a $25 million deal.
To make such a trade work, the Giants, in Miller's proposed idea, would send the Phillies cash considerations to help bring back a better return.

But what makes this somewhat ridiculous trade a bit more appealing from the Phillies' perspective is that neither Aidan Miller nor Gage Wood is included in it. Their top-two prospects wouldn't be involved in this deal.
Instead, 21-year-old infield prospect Aroon Escobar, who has a .649 OPS this season after posting a .774 OPS last year, would be the headliner. Moises Chace is a 23-year-old righty pitching prospect who has a 3.24 ERA this season and would be a big piece too.
But, the Phillies in this trade idea would land an outfield upgrade and a rotation upgrade, plus cash considerations to make the large contracts of Lee and Ray hurt less, in exchange for Escobar and Chace, not their top-two prospects in Wood and Miller.
This wild trade idea was called "realistic" by Miller, and while it would, in theory, work for both sides, it's hard to imagine such a big deal actually becoming reality by the August 3 trade deadline later this year.
