The Philadelphia Phillies, after a mid-season turnaround under Don Mattingly, gave Dave Dombrowski the green light to buy at the MLB trade deadline. He made a very fascinating move, acquiring Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants.

That deal led to Bryson Stott, Alec Bohm, and Bryce Harper all changing positions. It initially seemed to work, but the Phillies collapsed down the stretch, nearly missed the postseason, and lost to the Atlanta Braves in the NL Wild Card.

Now that the season is over, the Phillies need to decide if they should re-sign Luis Arraez. Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report is predicting they don't and let him walk, which would prove their deadline deal was not only a mistake, but a trade they lost.

Phillies would lose Luis Arraez trade if prediction comes true

"Philadelphia Phillies: IF Luis Arraez," Reuter writes. "... Alec Bohm and Edmundo Sosa are also free agents, so the Phillies have some decisions to make retooling their infield, but a third baseman or outfielder is a cleaner roster fit if they spend on a bat. Verdict: Walk."

The Phillies traded Ramon Marquez, a top pitching prospect having a breakout season, and reliever prospect Marty Gair to the Giants for Arraez and Caleb Kilian.

Kilian got hurt shortly after making his Phillies debut, and Arraez is now set to become a free agent. While Kilian will be around for multiple more seasons in Philadelphia, the centerpiece of the trade could, as Reuter is predicting, be gone after just two months.

If Reuter's prediction comes true, and Arraez does walk in free agency, the Phillies would've given up a blossoming young pitcher and another prospect for two months of Arraez and a depth reliever in Kilian.

That kind of trade would be an obvious loss for the Phillies and Dombrowski. It already wasn't a good trade, but losing Arraez would officially cement it as a mistake.

Dombrowski will have a lot of work to do this offseason, and fixing the infield is at the top of his list of priorities. If Arraez isn't a part of those plans, and he walks as Reuter predicts, then Dombrowski and the Phillies will have lost that trade in a big way.
