Phillies add two new pitchers to MLB roster after Andrew Painter decision

The Philadelphia Phillies lost the series finale against the Miami Marlins thanks to another rough start from Andrew Painter. The rookie's struggles have been alarming, and the Phillies decided they'd seen enough at the big leagues.

They sent Painter down to Triple-A following his Wednesday start, but didn't announce a roster move for the pitcher getting the big league call right away.

Ahead of the series against the New York Mets, the Phillies announced the two new pitchers they're adding to the MLB roster to replace Painter and struggling reliever Tanner Banks this season.

Phillies replace Andrew Painter, Tanner Banks with two pitchers

"Prior to tonight's game against the New York Mets, the Phillies recalled RHP Seth Johnson and selected the contract of RHP Bryse Wilson, both from Lehigh Valley (AAA). To make room on the 26-man roster, LHP Tanner Banks was optioned to Lehigh Valley," the Phillies announced.

With Painter's demotion to the minors opening a roster spot, the Phillies were able to call up one reliever. But, by optioning Banks to Triple-A as well, they were able to call up both right-handed relievers.

With Painter's ERA at a rough 7.06 and Banks' at a 5.86 ERA, it made sense to move on from both struggling pitchers. Wilson and Johnson are taking their place, joining the Phillies bullpen.

Wilson had a 6.29 ERA in 12 games and 11 starts in the minor leagues for the Phillies this season. He exercised an upward mobility clause in his contract, which forced the Phillies to either call him up to the big leagues or release him. They opted for the former.

Johnson was up in the big leagues with the Phillies earlier this year and posted a 7.36 ERA during his 3.2 innings of work. But, in Triple-A this season, he has a 1.33 ERA in 24 outings, and has been very good for the Iron Pigs in Lehigh Valley.

Wilson is more likely to be the Painter replacement as he has starting experience, while Johnson is set to replace Banks in the bullpen.

But, for now, both right-handed pitchers will join the bullpen, as the Phillies shake up the pitching staff by moving Painter and Banks to the minors after some rough starts to the season.
