Phillies' $20M offseason saga regret over Nick Castellanos extending into summer

1 hour ago 3

San Diego Padres outfielder Nick Castellanos is playing on a minimum MLB contract. The former Silver Slugger award winner is getting treated like one, too. Still, the Philadelphia Phillies continue paying the two-time All-Star like a front-line starter.

A sub-par defender throughout his 14-year career, Castellanos started at third base with the Detroit Tigers and transitioned to the outfield, with few improvements. His professional path diverged last season during a messy divorce with the Philadelphia Phillies organization.

The Phillies' front office took the first shot by inking former World Series champion Adolis Garcia to a one-year, $10 million deal last December. They did so without resolving an ever-messy situation with Castellanos, their troubled $20 million-per-season right fielder.

Their actions -- or inaction -- led them to make a regrettable offseason decision.

Padres' Nick Castellanos dogged by 'Miami incident' with Phillies

Implicated by team officials for possessing beer in the dugout last season, Castellanos eventually received his release Feb. 12. In a four-page letter, the then 33-year-old veteran addressed the "Miami incident," admitting to the behavior.

"As a veteran of the game of baseball, there are rules, and I broke one in Miami," Castellanos wrote. "After being taken out of a close ball game in front of my friends and family, I brought a Presidente (beer) into the dugout. I then sat right next to Rob and let him know that too much slack in some areas and too tight of restrictions in others are not conducive to us winning.

"Shoutout to my teammates and Howie for taking the beer out of my hands before I could take a sip (I appreciate you guys)."

The Phillies received little financial relief as the Castellanos saga continues to develop into one of the organization's top offseason mistakes.

Garcia's output has done little to help the franchise forget the recent chaos. The eight-year veteran went 1-for-3 with two strikeouts during Sunday's 3-1 loss to the Cleveland Guardians at Citizens Bank Park. He's batting .203 with four home runs and 15 RBI. He slammed 39 homers for the Texas Rangers in 2023.

Following a 9-19 start, new interim manager Don Mattinly sparked the club to six consecutive series wins, going 16-6. Back in the NL Wild Card conversation, the Phillies likely will need to dedicate more financial resources to improving their right-field production.

The Padres could also look to make a move before the trade deadline. With injuries depleting their outfield depth, Castellanos has been starting, but is often replaced late in games due to defensive concerns. He entered Sunday batting .192 and did not start the series finale against the visiting Athletics

Talk about a regrettable situation.
