Philies predicted to make intriguing decision on last years first-round pick who throws 100 MPH

The Philadelphia Phillies continue to invest heavily in pitching, and one of their most intriguing young arms is first-round pick Gage Wood.

After being selected out of Arkansas, Wood has been viewed as one of the top prospects in the Phillies farm due to an electric fastball that was on full display during the College World Series, throwing the third no hitter ever in the event.

However, as exciting as that potential is, the Phillies have to be smart here. While there’s been noise about Wood possibly reaching the majors this season, the reality of the current roster makes that timeline unlikely.

Evan Macy of PhillyVoice predicted that we won’t see him until 2027. However, as he touched on, an injury or two can change that.

“The Phillies grabbed Wood — an electric college pitcher — in the first round last year and immediately there were musings about him making the team in the fall.

“Obviously, that was a little ambitious, and with the roster fully set for 2026 it might take some serious injuries in the starting rotation to get Wood involved this season,” he wrote.

A 2027 debut feels far more in line with the Phillies’ plan. This would allow Wood to continue refining his stuff and get used to professional hitters.
