The Philadelphia Eagles started their Super Bowl title defense with a nail-biting win over the Dallas Cowboys, but it didn’t come without drama. Rookie-turned-star cornerback Cooper DeJean was one of several players fined by the league following a testy Week 1 matchup.

Multiple players on both sides hit with penalties after chippy rivalry game

Early in the first quarter, after Dallas return man KaVontae Turpin was brought down, tempers flared. DeJean tangled with Cowboys linebacker Marist Liufau, and things escalated quickly when the former Iowa standout ripped Liufau’s helmet off. Liufau responded by yanking DeJean’s facemask before officials stepped in.

On the field, only Liufau was flagged for unnecessary roughness. But the NFL office later handed DeJean an $11,593 fine for unnecessary roughness/facemask. Liufau was also fined, though his penalty came in at $7,186.

The league didn’t stop there. Philadelphia cornerback Jakorian Bennett was hit with a $23,186 fine for a hip-drop tackle, linebacker Nolan Smith was charged $11,593 for taunting, and defensive tackle Jalen Carter drew the steepest punishment of the week—$57,222, for spitting on Dak Prescott before the game’s opening snap, which earned him an immediate ejection.

Dallas also had another player fined: rookie tackle Tyler Guyton was docked $12,172 for striking/kicking/kneeing during the first quarter scrum.

The Eagles ultimately pulled out a 24-20 win, but the heated rivalry lived up to its reputation with both sides facing league discipline afterward. Now, Philadelphia turns its attention to another primetime showdown, a Sunday Night Football rematch with Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
