Costello van Steenis showed why he is one of the top middleweight fighters in mixed martial arts on Friday, successfully defending his PFL title over Fabian Edwards.
Van Steenis caught Edwards in the third round and did not let up, finishing him with vicious elbows to earn a second win over his rival. This one took place live on ESPN+ from the Palacio Vistalegre in Madrid, Spain.
An ill-advised attempt at a takedown by Edwards led to the finish, both of the fight and for his brother of former UFC champion Leon Edwards, as he was rendered unconscious.
AJ McKee dominates in co-main event
The co-main event of the show saw AJ McKee improve to 24-2 with a decision over Adam Borics. The No. 2-ranked McKee had no trouble handling Borics, who came into the bout ranked fourth in the featherweight division of the PFL.
Franco Tenaglia, Jacinta Austin and veteran Linton Vassell were all main card winners by stoppage, including a second round finish for the 42-year-old Vassell over Jose Augusto.
Luciano Pereira, Borja Garcia, Gino van Steenis, Claudio Pacella and Ignacio Campos added prelim wins.
Up next for the PFL
The promotion returns to the United States on Saturday, March 28 for an event in Pittsburgh. The main card features Johnny Eblen vs. Bryan Battle live on ESPN2.
