Bryce Underwood is the rare true freshman who is going to start from day one at quarterback at a major collegiate program. The Michigan Wolverines went all-out to get him, including reportedly making him an offer he just couldn't refuse to flip his commitment from LSU to Michigan.
He comes with high expectations, but he's more than equipped to handle them. In PFF analyst Max Chadwick's eyes, he is the ultimate true freshman this year, and the Wolverines can rely on him.
"It makes sense why Sherrone Moore was so desperate to keep him in state. Since the Rivals’ Industry rating began in 2004, no quarterback recruit has had a higher rating than Underwood (99.87). And Michigan had the fourth-worst team passing grade in 2024 (54.3), starting three different signal-callers last season," Chadwick said. Underwood is going to totally reshape this offense and pair well with a good defense that kept the Wolverines afloat last year.
Of course, Underwood has to play in the loaded Big Ten with defending champion Ohio State, but it certainly looks like the Michigan QB is poised to take that all on and perform to expectations because of his "elite" arm talent, mobility, and more. He's so good, he got on the cover of a video game as the only true freshman to do so.
Chadwick said, "He had a 50-4 career record in high school with two state championships and broke the Michigan high school record for career passing yards and touchdowns. He’s expected to be the savior of the Wolverines’ program and should start Week 1 under center. Underwood enters Ann Arbor with some of the most hype ever seen for an incoming true freshman."
The hype is massive, but when you look deeper, it's plain to see why and that the hype is deserved.
