Pete Alonso breaks silence on staying with Mets after this season

The New York Mets signed Pete Alonso to a two-year, $54 million deal in free agency last offseason. However, his deal allows him to opt out after this year.

After the year he has put together, an opt-out is all but guaranteed. He was named an All-Star and his batting average is at a career high. His power is still there as well. He has 21 home runs to go with his .280 average. He also has a National League-best 21 doubles.

Alosno has put himself in a position to earn a lucrative contract in free agency. However, he is happy he stayed with the Mets for this season, but he spoke about his desire to stay beyond this season, and how the business side of baseball will play a role, according to SNY's Colin Martin.

"I mean if it works out, you know, it would be really special to (stay)," Alonso told SNY. "But again, there's a lot of things that happen business-wise and a lot of unpredictable things that happen in free agency.

"Yeah, this time around, like last year there's no guarantee, but happy I stayed. This is a great team, it's a great group of guys. We'll see what happens business wise, nothing's guaranteed, so we'll see."

The Mets clearly were not comfortable making him a long-term offer last year. Will that change this time around? Alonso has always noted his desire to stay with the Mets, but he will want to be paid fairly. He is now a five-time All-Star and is having one of the best seasons of his career.
