People have just realized what a popular condom brand means

The world’s most popular sexual health company has finally revealed exactly what the brand name means, after many speculated online about what it stood for.

Durex is a company predominantly known for selling condoms and lubricants, launching its first moistened birth control device in the 1950s.

However, the popular brand has existed since 1929, with the London Rubber Company registering the business name in that year.

The London Rubber Company itself was established in 1915 by LA Jackson, selling imported barbers’ condoms and accessories.

But, for the last several years, social media users have speculated what the term “Durex” actually means or stands for.

Many thought it was a play on “durable sex” or “during sex.”

“I was today years old when I realized @durex stands for ‘durable sex’, one X poster wrote.
Another said: “Durex stands for ‘DURing sEX’ neh?”

“I think Durex stands for ‘durable sex’,” another claimed.

One pondered: “Have you ever wondered what Durex stands for? Or you thought it’s the name of the brand owner?”

An Instagram user wrote recently: “I thought it was an acronym for ‘DURing sEX’.”

Others asked how the condom itself was durable, joking it likely depended on the user.

But one person correctly guessed what the brand’s name actually represented.

“#WILT The Durex name stands for DUrability, REliability and eXcellence,” the social media user said.

“As the number 1 condom and lube brand worldwide, we’re proud to bring our 95 years’ experience leading conversations on sexual wellness and pleasure to encourage Aussies to have the best — and safest — sex possible.

“Our mission is to ensure people feel great about whatever they’re into, and can feel safe while doing it. Here at Durex, we’re all about real sex that feels good and does good.”

The brand’s urge to encourage sexual wellness comes as it was discovered that sexually transmitted infections were on the rise in Australia.

Infertility, neurological and cardiovascular disease, ectopic pregnancies, stillbirths, certain cancers, and an increased risk of HIV are all health effects that can be caused by STIs if left untreated, according to the World Health Organization.

The Kirby Institute found there were 6036 cases of syphilis reported in 2022, 82% of those were males.

Rates of syphilis more than tripled between 2013 and 2019, then increased again between 2020 and 2022.

The rate of Australian females infected with syphilis increased six-fold from 1.3 people to 8.8 per 100,000 since 2013.

In 2022, there were 93,777 cases of chlamydia reported in Australia, about 70% of those were in people aged between 15 and 29 years old.

There were also 32,877 cases of gonorrhea, with 71% of those reported in males.
