After 11 years as the Penn State Nittany Lions head coach, ESPN's Pete Thamel is reporting that the school has fired the head coach after their loss yesterday to Northwestern.
"Penn State athletic director Pat Kraft informed James Franklin of the news within the last hour. There’ll be a press conference where Kraft addresses the media and any questions on Monday."
The Nittany Lions started the 2025 season ranked as high as the No. 3 team in the country, just behind Texas and Ohio State, but after three straight losses, all within the Big Ten, the school has apparently seen enough and decided to let Franklin go.
Part of the problem with Franklin is his record against the top 25. Franklin's overall record is 15-29 against the top 25, and against the top ten, it's 4-21.
Franklin was brought in from Vanderbilt to replace Joe Paterno after Paterno was caught up in a child abuse scandal that involved his former assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky.
Despite making the College Football Playoff last year, it was a short stint, losing to Notre Dame, 27-24, and now, apparently, the school's administration has had enough and decided to let him go.
The question now is, who is going to replace Franklin once the season is over? Whoever replaces Franklin will find a program in much better shape than how Franklin found it after Paterno left.
